The tension between the chief minister and governor of Gujarat escalated today, with Kamla Beniwal seeking to know how much the Narendra Modi government had spent on his recent three-day Sadbhavana fast.

Beniwal’s notice came a day after Modi sought her recall at a “maha rally”,called to build support against the governor’s appointment of a Lokayukta bypassing the state government.

The governor has sought to know the expenses based on a representation from Mahagujarat Janta Party chief Gordhan Zadaphia.

“We requested the governor that as per the state Assembly business rules, the state government cannot spend a penny without taking permission of the Assembly and as approved in the Budget. We have sought an explanation from the government for wasting Rs 55 crore public money for the CM’s personal publicity fast. It is open loot,” Zadaphia, who was once a minister with the Modi government but later parted ways, told The Indian Express.

The notice sent by the principal secretary to the governor to additional chief secretary,General Administration Department is “related to expense from the public exchequer and financial irregularities” for Modi’s fast.

It reads: “The office-bearers of the Mahagujarat Janta Party had met the governor on September 19 and submitted a memorandum in above reference so we are forwarding the letter for further action. The above information is needed to be placed before the governor so it is requested to send concerned details at the earliest.”

Zadaphia himself has announced a fast for a Lokayukta probe into allegations of corruption against the Modi government.
