Probe deeper

The transfer of Ashok Khemka, the IAS officer who had initiated the probe on irregular land deals involving Robert Vadra, has been widely criticised ('IAS officer probing Vadra land deals shunted out, Haryana cites HC order', IE, October 17). The Haryana government has tried to justify it by saying it was following a high court order. At this juncture, it would be ideal if the Supreme Court took cognisance of the matter. Public anger about corruption has reached unprecedented levels and cannot be brushed aside. The judiciary remains our last hope.

Fight the influence

ALTHOUGH the figures cited by Rahul Gandhi seem a bit excessive, the drug problem in Punjab cannot be ignored ('7 out of 10 youths take to drugs in Punjab: Rahul', IE, October 12). Drug use has indeed become rampant in the state. The government should first assess the magnitude of the problem and then devise an effective and sustainable programme to curb drug use and treat those dependent on drugs. It will not be a simple task, but it is one that should be taken up urgently. Drugs are corroding the structure of our society. It is time for the Central and state governments to stop blaming each other and take concrete measures to tackle the problem.

All that glitters

THIS refers to 'Auctioning gold mines can cut import: Gadkari' (IE, October 16). Gold is not a basic necessity for the people of this country. Importing gold and spending large sums of money on it is not advisable. The government should aim at higher production within the country. The funds thus saved should be used to fulfil basic necessities that many in the country are forced to do without.
