  • An inquiry has been ordered into the case in which the Lucknow police allegedly arrested a mentally-challenged person to cover its laxity on Monday. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) had arrested 20 people from Charbagh station on Monday, among whom was Pankaj, arrested for begging in an area under the jurisdiction of Railways. All the accused were presented before the court and on the direction of the judge were sent to the Lucknow Jail on Monday. The jail officials, however, suspected a foul play in the arrest of a youth as they found his details did not match with those of Pankaj. In a letter to the RPF, the jail authorities said the profile of an accused identified as Pankaj does not match with his details as the man seemed to be mentally-challenged. The jail officials found irregularities on the part of the police after they questioned other accused brought to the jail along with Pankaj. “They said Pankaj escaped from police custody after he was produced before the court. To hush up the matter, the police caught this mentally-challenged man and sent him to jail,” said a jail official. “I have come to know about the incident and inquiry has been ordered,” said Senior Commandant of the RPF posted in Lucknow, RP Chibbar.
