The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),which is probing the Adarsh housing society scam, has told the Bombay High Court that it is thoroughly investigating the allegations levelled against Union ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh and Sushilkumar Shinde by social activist Pravin Wategaonkar.

Wategaonkar has based his affidavit on the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

In an affidavit filed by the CBI on June 1,Superintendent of Police (SP) CBI Ravindra Singh, who is investigating the case, stated: “The allegations made by the petitioner against Vilasrao Deshmukh,Sushilkumar Shinde,Sunil Tatkare (Cabinet minister) and others are being thoroughly investigated by the CBI.”

In the affidavit,Singh further stated that the reference made by the petitioner about the report of CAG on Adarsh society, which has brought out certain acts of commission and omission on part of public servants,is being thoroughly investigated by the CBI.

In April,Wategaonkar had filed an affidavit before the High Court based on the CAG report, alleging that former chief minister Deshmukh owns two proxy flats in the scam-tainted Adarsh society in South Mumbai. In his affidavit,he also asked for the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the role of Deshmukh,Shinde and other politicians and bureaucrats for alleged irregularities committed by them while giving favours to Adarsh society.

The High Court on April 30 directed the CBI and ED to file their replies to Wategaonkar’s allegations.

In his affidavit,Wategaonkar had claimed that in most cases, decisions taken resulted in undue favour to the society. Many of the officials, who were involved in such decisions, were direct beneficiaries,he alleged in his affidavit quoting the CAG report.
