The Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Janmjayanti Mahotsav Samiti will carry out a procession on April 14 to commemorate the 199th birth anniversary of Ambedkar. The annual procession, which began in 1976,was called off in 1992 owing to the riots following the Babri Masjid demolition and the subsequent ban by the Gujarat government on the rally, said Jaivardhan Harsh, chief convenor of the committee.
Besides, the gradual closure of the mills and the paucity of workers forced us to discontinue it, said Harsh.
Ishwar Parmar, another convenor, said: Many respect Ambedkar, but very few follow him. Through the rally we want to spread his message of brotherhood and equality.
The procession will start at 2 pm from Ambedkar Chowk in Amdupura and cover places like Kalupur Bridge,Ahmedabad Railway Station and ST road before culminating at Gita Mandir in Majoorgram.
