Country’s top ten profitable international airports reported a decline of 19 per cent in profits before tax in 2008-09 as compared with the previous year on account of dip in passenger traffic and closure of two major old international airports,Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Delhi International Airport Limited remained the most profitable for a third year in row,raking in Rs 489 crore profit before tax during 2008-09,followed by Mumbai International Airport Limited which reported Rs 451 crore PBT. Chennai and Kolkatta International airports that posted profit before tax of Rs 399 crore and Rs 93 crore respectively,trailed behind. Other international airports that posted profits are Goa,Pune,Ahmedabad,Calicut and Hyderabad.

Remaining eight international airports — Coimbatore,Jammu,Port Blair,Jaipur,Trivandrum,Amritsar,Guwahati and Nagpur — posted losses of around Rs 105 crore during 2008-09.

Amritsar,Guwahati and Nagpur airports have been reporting losses for the last three consecutive years,with Nagpur airport posting losses of Rs 36 crore during 2008-09 — more than double the losses posted by it in 2006-07.

Top three profitable domestic airports — Juhu,Srinagar and Chandigarh — reported PBT of Rs 22 crore during 2008-09. Srinagar and Chandigarh airports drastically improved their performance over the previous year,having reported losses of Rs 13 crore and Rs 2 crore respectively. Apart from these,74 operational domestic airports run by the Airport Authority of India have been reporting losses for three consecutive years,from 2006-07 to 2008-09.
