Proposal to allot land for CNG stations at Katraj, Gultekdi cleared

The long pending issue of increasing number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in the city was taken forward with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee on Thursday clearing a proposal to allot land for CNG stations at Katraj and Gultekdi.

To meet the increasing demand of CNG, the committee decided to allot the land to the Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL). "It was a long pending demand. We need more CNG stations as the demand has increased. The land has been allotted as per the demand,'' Baburao Chandere, chairman of the standing committee of PMC, told the media. The proposed CNG station at Katraj will come up near Katraj garbage ramp over an area of 750 sq metres for which the committee has decided that the PMC will charge Rs 10 lakh a year. The second spot will be at Gultekdi, spread over 470 sq metres near the Gultekadi vehicle depot, and for this the corporation will charge Rs 9 lakh per annum. The panel has stated that a 30-year agreement will be signed with the MNGL and the lease will increase 12 per cent every three years, said Chandere after the meeting.

The auto unions had demanded more CNG stations in the city.

At a recent meeting, MLC Mohan Joshi too had met representatives and said land should be allotted for more CNG stations. To plug the growing gap between the demand of CNG and its supply in the city, the MNGL had proposed to start eight new outlets on private lands this fiscal as part of its plan to set up 40 filling stations by the end of 2013-2014. MNGL officials had stated that they would want to increase the number of pumps to 25 from the existing 17.
