Prosecution plea for summons to FBI agents

After getting permission from the court to present more evidence to prove all the 86 charges framed against lone arrested terrorist Ajmal Kasab, the prosecution in the Mumbai terror attack case on Thursday moved an application for issuing summons to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents who would depose about the technical evidence. This is expected to prove the conspiracy behind the attacks.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said,“Six agents will be deposing in the court. However, for security reasons as they are also investigating other terror-related cases in various parts of the world, the FBI has sought to conceal the names and addresses of its agents who would depose. The agency,in a letter to me,informed that its agents apprehend a potential danger to their lives if their identities are revealed.”

The prosecution,in its application, pleaded before the court to direct the media not to publish the names and addresses of the agents when they depose in the court. It also requested the court not to include their names in the court’s judgment or any of its records. The court has reserved its order on the plea for Friday.

“Now that most of the charges have been accepted by Kasab in his admission of guilt statement,it is not necessary for us to examine all witnesses. I plan to complete the recording of evidence at the earliest and not more than 50 witnesses would be examined,” Nikam said.

‘A drama’
Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who has been marshalling the evidence in the Mumbai terror attack case, has labelled the plead-guilty statement of Ajmal Kasab as another of his dramas to wriggle out from the maximum punishment of death.

Nikam said,“The court’s order has spoiled all attempts of defence to sabotage the trial. Kasab had played a drama with the sentiments of people. The common man is carrying an impression why Kasab is not being convicted and why the prosecution wanted to adduce more evidence.”
