Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today accepted the demand of state MLAs to include protection of crops from wild animals by employing rakhas (guards) under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

Winding up his two-day meeting with MLAs on budget priorities for 2010-11,Dhumal also assured a mid-term appraisal of the plan schemes by October-November to ensure proper implementation of schemes.

The CM also directed that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of key schemes should be completed soon and objections about its feasibility should be brought to the notice of MLAs.

Dhumal said the government has been making efforts to ensure that NREGA could also be used for protection of rabi and kharif crops from wild boars and monkeys, which were causing heavy damage to crops. Dhumal said the government would consider transferring the control of tubewells from village tubewell committees to the Irrigation and Public Health department but added that the users would be required to pay for operational and water charges.
