The power and water crisis in the city forced the residents to take to the streets in protest on Tuesday.
Residents blocked the morning peak-hour traffic for as long as five hours on the Old Delhi Road, resulting in a domino effect of a seven-km-long jam on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
Traffic was affected in Palam Vihar, Udyog Vihar, Shankar Chowk, sectors 21, 22, 23, Kapashera Border, MG Road and other parts of the city.
DSC officials at the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway said they had deployed extra traffic marshals to control the situation.
Residents of Chakkapur, Kanhai, Nathupur and Wazirabad alleged that they had electricity for only half an hour in the past three days. The residents gheraoed the local power station and threatened to stop work there if electricity supply was not restored.
People claimed that while the power supply has been erratic for the past one month, the situation on Monday was particularly dismal. "At 6 pm electricity supply resumed and again at 8 pm there was total black out," said Subhash Yadav, a resident.
