Protests against the n-plant spread to Kanyakumari

The protests against the Kudankulam nuclear plant spread to Kanyakumari on Tuesday, as a large number of women and children went on a hunger strike against its operation.

Protesters gathered outside a church here and raised slogans against the state government for the crack down on protesters across the state.

Speaking to reporters, Nasaren, the priest of the church, lashed out at the police who resorted to baton charge, and fired tear gas shells at them.

"The incident has affected us deeply and we condemn it. They are inflicting violence on us by throwing tear gas shells and are beating us. They have attacked us and we were forced to stop our protest. They have vacated the entire village and this has affected everyone from children to women. Police has caused a lot of damage here," Nasaren said.

A fisherman was killed on Monday (September 10) after police opened fire at the demonstrators.

Earlier on Monday, police used tear gas to break up thousands of protesters on a beach near the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu, as the agitators tried to lay siege on the plant.

A 44-year old fisherman was killed as the protests turned violent.

The government''s Atomic Energy Regulatory Board last month gave clearance for fuel to be loaded into one of the Kudankulam plant''s two reactors, one of the last steps before it can begin producing power.
