Authorities in Lakhimpur district in eastern Assam were on Thursday compelled to stop forcible movement of an over-dimensional consignment comprising machineries to the 2000-MW Lower Subansiri dam and hydro-electric project in Arunachal Pradesh after several thousand protesters blocked the highway shouting slogans against construction of the dam.
We have suspended further movement of the truck-trailer carrying the ODC to the dam site through Lakhimpur in the best interest of law and order after about 4,000 people squatted on the National Highway in the heart of the town, Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Anwaruddin Choudhury said.
The AASU,AJYCP,KMSS and Takam Mising Porin Kebang have been demanding immediate halt to construction of the mega dam on the Subansiri river in the Lower Subansiri district in Arunachal Pradesh on grounds that it would not be able to withstand any major earthquake.
An expert committee constituted by the Assam government last year had recommended smaller dams instead of large dams in view of the high seismicity of the region. He said while the truck-trailer had passed through the adjoining Sonitpur on Wednesday after the police removed protesters who created blockades, several people came out to the highway as it entered Lakhimpur Thursday morning.
