Following a story titled ‘No Chlorination, city water unfit for drinking: study’ dated June 5, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has sought a report from Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner and Municipal Corporation Commissioner in the matter by July 23.

Prem Nath Bhatia of Harcharan Nagar and Arvind Sharma of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar had sought the intervention of the commission alleging that the LMC was supplying drinking water without mixing a dose of chlorine in it. The complaint was made on June 8.

In his statement, Bhatia said, “The LMC is playing with the health of the residents. Many colonies of the city have been falling prey to diseases on regular basis. Even Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura’s own ward has witnessed the outbreak of gastro diseases. The MC Commissioner also knows how the local councillors have allocated the operation of tubewells to people who have no clue about chlorinating the drinking water. When we presented these facts along with the newspaper report to PSHRC, the commission intervened and called for a report from the local administration.”
