Panjab University (PU) has formed a ‘Plagiarism Committee’ under the Dean Research to check increasing incidents of cases of copying in PhD research theses and material. Also,to check this practice, the university is developing a special software that would detect copying by any researcher. This was announced during the Senate meeting of PU on Saturday. Apart from the detection of plagiarism, the university is taking stringent action against the delays in completion of a PhD course. As per the course guidelines framed by the committee, the entire course work for a PhD has to be completed within 120 days. Six months prior to the submission of thesis, the scholar has to be informed about his examiner, which is not the usual practice as the students keep waiting for the assigning of examiners under whom the research would be done.

In addition to this, the thesis report by the examiner has to be given within a period of a month. Within 10 days of the letter received by the department concerned, viva has to be conducted. All these decisions have been taken in view of repeated complaints by the PhD candidates in delay on the part of the departments and the guides by years in completion of the course.
