Panjab University (PU) teachers and students, especially girls, participated in a candle light march organised on Sunday in the campus in memory and grief of the 23 year-old rape victim who succumbed to injuries.
Many teachers and students gathered outside the Gandhi Bhawan at 5.30 pm and marched towards the Student's Center. After reaching the Student's Center, a two-minute silence was observed for the deceased.
Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) organised the march.
Addressing the gathering, PUTA president Mohammad Khalid said that PUTA will be writing letters to the Prime Minister, President, Vice President and other ministers seeking implementation of stringent laws against crimes like rape.
It was also observed that there is a need for gender sensitization and for PU's security measures to be revisited.
Teachers also opined that the behaviour of boys on the campus needed to be rectified.
Already on January 1, the Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover has called a meeting of Chief Security Officer, Dean Student Welfare and PUTA president to discuss the security issues on the campus.
