PU holds seminar on role of culture in society

As part of the golden jubilee celebration of the Panjab University,a three-day national seminar on ‘Globalisation and Cultural Identities: Philosophical Challenges and Opportunities’ began at the Philosophy Department on Monday.

As part of the golden jubilee celebration of the Panjab University,a three-day national seminar on ‘Globalisation and Cultural Identities: Philosophical Challenges and Opportunities’ began at the Philosophy Department on Monday.

Professor VT Sebastian,Chairperson of the department,delegates from across the country are participating in the seminar. He added that the the Vice-Chancellor had given Rs 1. 5 lakh to every department to celebrate the golden jubilee of the university.

The event was inaugurated by the Director of Higher Education,Raji P Srivastava.

Former Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences,IIT Kanpur,Professor S A Shaida,highlighted the role of culture in constituting and reproducing society. Professor Gopal Guru from JNU talked about culture as a framework of self-understanding of individuals and collectivities.

Other members present on the occasion were Professor Bindu Puri from Delhi University,Professor Augustine from Chennai and Bala Ganapathy from Bangalore. A philosophical play on ‘Who am I?’ was also staged by the students.
