PU set to hike fees, V-C says not more than 10%

Students of Panjab University (PU) should be prepared to pay more from the coming academic session as the varsity has decided to hike the fees of both traditional courses and the self-financed courses. Authorities, however, are yet to decide on the percentage of the hike.

This was disclosed by the PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover while interacting with the media persons here in his committee room on Monday. " The decision came after Board of Finance concluded that in order to meet the expenses of the university, the hike in fees was necessary. The hike will effected keeping in mind the rate of inflation. I assure that the increase in the fee will not be more than 10 per cent of the existing fee structure," the vice-chancellor said. Stating that 85 per cent of the budget is used to pay salaries and related payments, Prof Grover said revenue fell short of the university's expenditure.

On whether the Punjab government was handing over its share, the V-C said that the state was giving Rs 23 crore to the varsity per year. University authorities have written to the government regarding the amount that is pending with them.

On February 11, the board of finance proposed a budget of Rs 468 crore for the development of the university and its affiliated colleges. The board had also proposed a deficit budget of Rs 328 crore under a non-plan head and Rs 14 crore as revenue. This budget will come up for approval before the Syndicate meeting and later before the Senate.
