After the CBSE,it is now Panjab University (PU) which is all set to implement an internal examination system for all its departments from this academic session and to wind up the age-old centralised system. With the aim of further streamlining the examination process and implementing an open and transparent system, all the students would be shown their evaluated answer sheets.
Since the internal and open system that was recently introduced only in Science honours schools was appreciated by students as well as faculty members and there was a smooth conduct of examinations by these honours schools,it was decided to implement this system in all the departments, said Controller of Examinations Prof A K Bhandari.
Not denying the possibility of favouritism by teachers while evaluating their students,Prof Bhandari said that it would entirely depend on their integrity. With more than 75 departments and around 15,000 students enrolled in these departments, the authorities are expecting all the examinations conducted by the departments to be completely internal, continuous and open.
According to the rules framed, the evaluated answer scripts would be shown to the students, according to a schedule announced by the concerned department. The answers would be discussed and the rationale of assessment explained to the students by the concerned teachers.
After discussing the answers with the students, the teachers would finally submit the award list to the Postgraduate Academic Programme Monitoring and Execution Committee (PGAPMEC) convener. The process would leave no scope for students to seek re-evaluation.
They would be required to sign the answer sheets and if a student is not satisfied with the evaluation,he can approach the PGAPMEC,which would consist of five to seven faculty members and would meet once a month.
Prof Bhandari added that the teacher for a particular course would set the question paper and also be the invigilator and script evaluator. In case there is more than one person who teaches the same course, the Board of Control would designate the teachers as Instructor-in-Charge on rotation basis.
One of the teachers would set the question paper in consultation with other teachers of the course as well as jointly invigilate and evaluate the answer scripts. The Board of Control would be required to send the list of examiners to the Controller of Examinations office by the end of October, added Prof Bhandari.
