PU V-C calls for autonomy of teachers

Panjab University (PU) Vice -Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover on Saturday proposed that the autonomy of internal assessment and teaching evaluation methods for colleges situated in Chandigarh should be provided, but it should be subject to the approval of statutary bodies of the varsity.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover made this proposition while delivering a keynote address at National Seminar on Education Reforms: Challenges and Strategies at GGDSD College, Sector 32.

Moreover, Prof Arun Grover justified the demand of the UT Administration for more teaching days and a better evaluation system.

"There is a need to have modular development with more infrastructure facilities for the colleges located in rural areas, in order to excel and complete with private universities opening in an around Chandigarh," he added.

Prof Sudhanshu Bhushan of the National University of Education Planning emphasised that no reform process could be successful without keeping in mind autonomy of teachers and also preparing reforms for the students belonging to lower income groups of society.

The seminar was attended by professors teaching at various educational institutions across the UT Administration.

PU panel traces development of globalisation

Tracing the historical development of the process of globalisation from the early 19th century to 1940-70, Dr Pramod Kumar, Director Institute for Development and Communications and the chairperson of the Punjab Governance and Reforms Commission said that in the present era, globalisation in the form of privatisation has been responsible for wage inequalities, poverty, and unemployment in our society.

This was while delivering a lecture organised by the Department of Sociology, DAV College, Sector 10, in association with Heal Society and S-4 Trust, Chandigarh on the topic - 'Globalisation: Socio-Cultural and Economic Concerns in North-West India'.

The panel discussion was presided over by Prof BS Ghuman, Department of Public Administration, PU.
