After being allegedly harassed by his headmaster, a Class IX student of Jorashoktala High School in Bally in Howrah district committed suicide today at his residence.
According to police, Bhaskar Sarkar (16), a resident of Nischinda in Bally, hanged himself in his house around 10.30 am.
A senior police officer said, “Bhaskar told his parents on Thursday that the headmaster had called them after he was caught teasing the mathematics teacher. However, his father refused to meet the headmaster saying he had some important work.”
Bhaskar’s father Biswanath Sarkar left for work around 10 am today while Madhabi, his mother, went to fetch Bhaskar’s younger sister Puja from school. Other than Bhaskar, there was no one present in the house when the student took the extreme step.
After Madhabi returned with her daughter, she found her son hanging from the ceiling of their home. Alarmed by Madhabi’s scream, neighbours rushed in and informed the police, which have now sent the body for postmortem.
Later, the victim’s father filed an FIR with the Bally police station alleging the headmaster of the school, Kaushik Ghosh, used to frequently harass his son.
“The victim’s father told us Bhaskar used to complain about his headmaster very often. Bhaskar was said to have told his father that he was not among the boys who teased the mathematics teacher and he was framed in the matter. The victim’s father alleged the headmaster threatened his son of dire consequences he did not meet him. Bhaskar was even told he would not be allowed to sit in the exam,” said a police officer.
