  • Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday pulled up the J&K government for slow pace of work on the two-room flats for migrant Kashmiri Pandits being constructed in this village under the rehabilitation package Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, announced two years ago.

“This is not acceptable.... What is the part of construction already complete? How much time will you now take to complete the entire project,” Chidambaram told officials on a reprimanding note at Jagti complex, which he visited in the morning.

When Relief Commissioner Vinod Koul tried to explain reasons, attributing the delay in meeting the deadline to the Amarnath agitation last year and the problems with executing agency Maytas Infra, a sister concern of Satyam which was caught in a scam, Chidambaram said: “All that is not acceptable.”

Chidambaram spent nearly two hours at the complex. “According to the schedule that I have told, around 2,160 flats must be completed by December 2009. There is some slippage but I will speak to the companies concerned and ensure they meet the first deadline, the rest 2,058 will be completed by May next year,” he told reporters later.
