Pune architects to design IIT Gandhinagar campus

The campus will have mainly three major areas, the academic buildings, housing for the staff and faculty and hostels for students

Four Pune-based architects who collectively call themselves Mitimitra are all set to design the IIT Gandhinagar campus. They got a chance to design the prestigious project after their design concept was chosen by a special jury nominated by the Board of Governors at IIT, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The four Mitimitra members, Madhav Hundekar, Makarand Godbole, Madhura Mulay and Vikram Hundekar, have been working in the field of architecture for the past 22 years.

After getting the masterplan of the campus ready, IIT Gandhinagar held a competition and invited architects from across India. The competition was aimed at getting the best design and concept for the permanent campus to be set up at Palej village in on 400 acres.

The campus will have mainly three major areas, the academic buildings, housing for the staff and faculty and hostels for students. The academic buildings would have a lecture theatre complex, research laboratories and facilities for the faculty and students, and recreational spaces for students including canteens and exhibition areas.

The winning design evolved by Mitimitra consists of a unique concept of development of an educational 'spine' - the hub of activities for the entire campus -and unique 'identities' not only for the buildings, but also for spaces contained within them.

"The design also employs many green technologies like night-purge cooling, rainwater harvesting, passive down-drought evaporation and cooling, and also aims at reusing every drop of water on campus," said Mitimitra members at a press conference in the city on Thursday. They said construction of the buildings at the Palej site would begin in a couple of months.
