As many as 30 young footballers will constitute the first batch of trainees at the Peninsula Pune FC Academy (PPFCA),which will be launched by I-League club Pune FC on July 18. Ranjan Choudhary, head, youth development at Pune FC,will take charge of the academy.
Of the 30 trainees,25 made the grade after a gruelling set of open trials involving around 280 players from across the country over the past six months.
The other five are members of Pune FC’s under-19 team. The youngsters will stay at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Hostel in Balewadi and train at the Pune FC training ground in Mamurdi for the two-year training programme.
The programme was identified to fill the gap of scouting for talent at the professional level and then grooming them, which is time-consuming, said Chirag Tanna, director, operations,Pune FC. PFC is confident of full placement of the young footballers in the Division I and Division II of the ILeague, given the 80 per cent placement record for the previous batch of the U19 talents in 2010-2011.
The academy has also tied up with Vidya Valley School for the education of the trainees through the schools long-distance training programme, added Tanna.
