Punjab and Haryana getting hotter, receiving lesser rainfall

With climate change a real concern, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has found that, since 1980,temperatures have been increasing in Punjab and Haryana while there is a decrease in rainfall in both states. The findings are based on the analysis of quantified data, collected over a 30 year period, from 1980 to 2010.

The data shows that in Punjab, there is a rise of 0.3 degrees Celsius to 0.9 degrees Celsius in maximum temperature and a 0.3 degrees Celsius to 1.2 degrees Celsius increase in minimum temperature over the last 30 years. In Haryana, there is a rise of 0.3 to 0.6 degrees Celsius in maximum temperature with no significant change in the minimum during the same period.

“If we see the season-wise analysis, during the pre-monsoon period, which is from March to May,a rise of 0.01 to 0.08 degrees Celsius per year is observed in the maximum temperature, where as the minimum temperature shows a rise of 0.01 to 0.03 degrees Celsius per year in both the states. Between June and September (Monsoon),the maximum temperature drops by 0.01 to 0.03 degrees Celsius per year and the minimum temperature shows an increasing trend,” said Surender Paul,Director,Chandigarh Centre of IMD.

“In October to December (post monsoon),the maximum temperature shows a significant rise of 0.03 to 0.04 degrees Celsius per year in Punjab, while mixed trends are observed in Haryana. The minimum temperature during this period shows a rise of 0.02 to 0.08 degrees Celsius per year in both the states. In winters, from January to February, there are mixed trends in maximum and minimum temperatures in both the states,” added Paul.

The annual rainfall in Punjab and Haryana has decreased by 1 to 6 mm per year and the summer rainfall by 1 to 4 mm per year. Even the monsoon rains have decreased by 1 to 2 mm per year in Punjab, where as in Haryana, the same shows increasing trend by 1 to 5 mm per year.

According to Paul,Ambala and Hisar in Haryana and Patiala,Amristar and Ludhiana were chosen for the study. The daily meteorological data for the study has been obtained from the National Climate Centre in Pune and values were subject to quality control checks as per World Meteorological Organisation standards.

He added that further analysis with large data set and locations in this region was required.
