Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday announced that a World Class Heritage Memorial would be built in Delhi as a tribute to the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee and Shiromani Akali Dal had jointly given a call for observing Ardas Divas in the memory of the victims of the 1984 carnage. Badal arrived in the Capital last night specially to join the Sikh community in prayers.
Later Chief Minister’s Media Advisor Harcharan Bains said the Punjab government was considering building a memorial in the Capital.
At the prayer meet at Gurudwara Sahib Singh Sabha in Greater Kailash-II, Badal said, “The 1984 riots were even more painful and traumatic than Babar’s invasion since it happened at the hands of our own government.”
Badal also strongly urged the National Human Rights Commission to intervene, claiming that he did not any faith in the Congress government. He also asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh “why he was silent on non filing of chargesheet against the guilty”.
The Chief Minister also sought President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Singh’s intervention to set up special courts for speedy justice to the victims.
He also said his party was following up the issue with the National Human Rights Commission and will use “every peaceful and democratic weapon” to secure punishment to the guilty and justice for the victims.
