Punjab Engineering College unveils new vehicle control measures

Certain areas in Punjab Engineering College (PEC) will become vehicle-free from January 28 as part of the first phase of vehicle control measures.

In Phase-1, parts of three roads will become vehicle-free and two temporary parking areas will be created for students, one for two wheelers and the other for four wheelers. In Phases 2 and 3, these parking spaces will be made permanent by paving of the areas, provision of round-the-clock security, proper lighting arrangement and an appropriate token system.

"It is a unique project initiated by the students following a fatal accident on campus last semester. We hope that the measures will be implemented in a gradual manner in which the faculty, staff and students are not inconvenienced," said Professor Manoj Datta, Director, PEC. He added, "The progress will be closely monitored during the first week for a smooth transition from the existing system to the new one with students and faculty acting as facilitators".

The temporary parking places allotted for students will have a free security cover without tokens. Two security guards at each parking will help in the orderly parking of vehicles. The token system is likely to start in Phase-2.

The student parking will remain operational from 7 am to 5.30 pm on all working days. After 5.30 pm on working days and for a full day during holidays and vacations, the students may park their vehicles at other parking areas also.

For the students being dropped to or picked up from the institute by their parents, a drop-off and pick-up point has been designated near Gate 2 of the institute on the main road.

The roads which will remain closed have been barricaded. Parts of the roads which have been made no-vehicle zones include the road from PEC Market up to Verka Booth, the road from Students' Cafe to Sehaj Safai Kendra and the road in front of the auditorium. The parking near the Metallurgy Department is only for bicycles and the roads are open to pedestrians and bicyclists.
