Punjab turns to Drug Prevention Days to fight menace

Amid drug menace in Punjab, the state government has started trying different approaches to get rid of this menace that has brought a bad name to the state. From the state government's plan to hold art of living courses to fight the menace to the education department of the state organising `Drug Prevention Days' in all government schools on November 19 and 20, the state government is not leaving any stone unturned.
Director General School Education (DGSE) KS Pannu in a letter to the deputy commissioners of all the districts of the state, as well as District Education Officers (DEOs), had asked them to contribute earnestly for the success of the campaign in the state.
In Punjab, around 70 per cent youth between 15 and 35 years have become drug addicts. Around 3 per cent population of drug addicts belong to below 10 years of age.
DGSE officials said that according to a survey by the department, it had come to light that many school-going students were hooked to various kinds of drugs. It also revealed that many students consumed gutkhas and pan masalas, which is available outside most schools.
It also came into light that students below 15 years consumed liquor, mostly hooch, which was available at very cheap rate to them.
Panni has asked the DCs and DEOs to put extra effort to observe the Drug Prevention Days. The art of living classes have begun in Amritsar to fight drug menace.
