US President Barack Obama is asked 'fix' the Kashmir issue for his AfPak policy to make any progress.

In what is being seen here as a disturbing indication of Indian diplomacy falling short of expectations in the Middle-East, one of Saudi Arabia’s most powerful and influential royal family members Turki al-Faisal has openly urged US President Barack Obama to push India and Pakistan to “fix” the Kashmir issue for his AfPak policy to make any progress.

Saudi Arabia, he says, can play a supporting role.

Turki al-Faisal, head of Saudi intelligence for 24 years from 1977 to 2001 and who has served as Ambassador to US and UK, proposed a seven-point action plan for Obama to achieve progress in Afghanistan. This was spelled out in an article he wrote in the International Herald Tribune last Saturday.

The fifth point of this action plan is to “push India and Pakistan to fix Kashmir.”

“That is doable,” he wrote, “once both countries see a determined effort by the United States in that direction. Both countries are beholden to the United States: Pakistan for the military and financial support it receives and India for the atomic energy agreement it has signed with the United States. Saudi Arabia can play a supporting role.”

The writer is the son of the powerful former King Faisal ibn Abdul Aziz Al Saud who was credited with modernizing the Saudi Arabian economy.

Prince Turki’s stint as head of Saudi intelligence saw him preside over the massive operation to mobilize the mujahideen against the Soviets in Afghanistan.

He was considered to have played a significant role in building the mujahideen-ISI-Saudi-CIA nexus, wherein, the Mujahideen fought, ISI provided training, CIA and other US agencies helped with equipment while Saudi Arabia arranged the finances.

The Solution is for Pakistan to vacate POKBy: khandu patel | 15-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Turki al-Faisal obviously does not realise the ground realities of any Indian government at the centre. Pakistan when it had the chance in 1947 reneged on the terms of the UN brokered ceasefire. It has since then signed the Simla accord with India treating Kashmir as bilateral issue between them. The US simply has no more standing on the issue than Saudi Arabia which has consistently backed Pakistan. If Saudi Arabia hopes to get the Americans to do the dirty work for them by twisting India's arm to yield on the issue, well, there are limits to what America would do for them. There are limits even to American diplomacy at the best at times on issues on which India and America converge. Kashmir for that reason is a non-starter. India would appreciate American investments in India's nuclear generation capacity, but it is hardly going to shake in its boots if American companies cut their noses to support Pakistan on Kashmir.
Push India, Pak to fix Kashmir: Saudi prince to ObamaBy: Ratan Gupta | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Being the most influential Moslem country, by far the most critical supplier of the most strategic commodity, being the center of Islam, sitting on a cash amount of 1 trillion dollars, sitting upon the resources no less than 40 trillion dollars, Saudis have lots of weight in the international arena. Read between the lines. They have refused to support Pakistan blindly. Instead they are pushing America to join for a mutual solution. This is a great news for India and Pakistan's foreign policy is failed. Had Saudis supported the Pakistani position, yes, I could have said that we lost the ground. We Indians should grab this opportunity and resolve Kashmir for good. In exchange we can ask cash rich Saudis to invest 2 trillion dollars in the next 10 years on our infrastructure. We need to build 1 to 2 thousand satelite cities in order to beat China. Each city will get no more than 5 lakh of population with strict laws. Move on now.
Saudi or Shoddy ArabiaBy: Mohan | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The cat is out and rarely Saudi's talk openly. They have done all the dirty deeds for the West and compromised on true Arab and Muslim interests. Why dont they show the same resolve to solve Arab Israel problem. Muslims do not want to live inharmony with the rest of the world. Their internal problems are being put under their dirty carpet and they want non-muslims destroyed! What a crazy idea! Firstly they must understand the true spirit of their own religion and interpret the Holy Koran in its true meaning which will bring peace to themselves so that they can live in harmony with themselves and nonmuslims. So whay do Saudis do not take step in the right direction rather than meddle in others affairs
