  • Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego” was a popular computer game in the ’80s, starring a trench-coated international fugitive, and meant to teach children geography as she popped up in various parts of the world. For long, after he was accused of facilitating the Bofors bribery, Ottavio Quattrocchi was a name like that — surfacing every now and then as the long arm of Indian justice reached out for him now in Malaysia, now in Argentina. Now, that attempt seems to have been decisively abandoned, as the UPA government dropped the case, citing paucity of evidence and declaring further pursuit a “waste of time”.

The opposition is outraged, but the Congress-led government shrugs its shoulders, saying it was about time the “phantom of Bofors” was exorcised and the character assassination ended. To outsiders, Bofors is the definitive symbol of corruption and the bad old days of one party, drunk on power. And ever since the UPA came back to power, it has persisted in the rolling over of institutional propriety. Law ministries, attorney generals and the CBI have all been complicit in this gradual loosening of the noose around Quattrocchi’s neck — unfreezing his London bank account (defying instructions from the Supreme Court, and later lamely admitting that over $4 million had already been withdrawn), withdrawing the Red Corner notice (issued to Interpol earlier by Indian law enforcement agencies, to enable his extradition). His name was cut out from the Interpol list just before UPA-I left office.

The furtiveness is what makes it so awful. Given that Quattrocchi is an enormously contentious figure, and that this one case is so bound up with the personal probity of the Congress leadership, it would have been far more fitting and honest to give the matter open airing. The involvement of law enforcement agencies in a seemingly stealthy way only casts the Quattrocchi case in a more lurid light. The sad fact is that even if Ottavio Quattrocchi was pure as the driven snow, and none of the charges stuck, the way this case is being handled, there is no possibility of political closure.

Was it Fiction then or is it now?????By: Anil Kohli | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Bofors ,Q and Congress are irreversibly wedded. The ongoing tamasha has us all wondering, where is the truth placed in all this.Did IE and Hindu conjure it all up way back in the 80's.Were these 2 newpapers paid large sums of money to rake up an issue and make it seem as corruption in high places. Not that we heard any complaints from the congress at that point of time, as all this being a conspiracy by their political opponents. Maybe the word conspiracy had still not been inducted into the lingua franca of the politicians. This terms has been the sole preserve of Lallu and his ilk.If IE and Hindu are culpable of fiction in case of Bofors, then they have done a marvellous job, cause this has endured for almost 20years.Just incase IE and Hindu were not culpabale,Bofors was not a figment of their imagination, then the 2 newspapers must come out in the open and explain once again to all Indians. Is fiction being employed by Congress now? The facts have been diluted with the time.

Congress doesn't careBy: NAVIN ASTI | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward For Congress there is no other go except to act this way, since it seems High Command's dirty hands are involved in it and no congress man including MMS would like it to get exposed. Moreover Mr.Q being Italian, blood is thicker than water for every Italian origin person.Congress knows that foolish Indian public has very short memory and NDTV,CNN-IBN,THE HINDU(newspaper)TOI are at its services in spite of such actions.Hence this is the fate of this great NATION.
Cleran Chit to QBy: Pankaj Hedaoo | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Shekhar,Though IE is the only paper to give some footage to the current UPA decision on Q; this edit does not have an edge. It is too mild!!None other than IE KNOWS that Rajiv Gandhi walked away with the money! Come on, call a spade a (Black) spade! Chitra did an excellent job while at Hindu (who kicked her out)and IE later took her services in one of the most brilliant display of fool-proof investigative journalism.ALAS! all her efforts are in vain. It seems if you have to be succesful in India, CORRUPTION is the only way out. MMS has been recently
Cleran Chit to QBy: M.S | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Its no surprise that IE's editorial was a mere murmur on the inefficiency of this case. The editorial has been openly soft pedalling with the first family of Cong Party. Hence nothing better can be expected.
