The Queen’s Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) reached Chandigarh on Thursday. The Queen’s Baton entered the Mohali district from Kurali and after passing through Kharar,reached Mohali,where Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand and SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar led the district administration to welcome the baton.

Lieutenant General (retd) Raj Khadyan,head of the Queens Baton Relay Run in India,said,”We are carrying a message of peace and harmony. After all,sporting activities have no borders,no religion,and no nationality. Its just promoting tolerance,camaraderie and accommodation. That’s the message we are carrying”.

The sportspersons,who also gathered in large numbers at Verka Chowk,where the baton was formally received,said this baton was a sign of peace. “It’s not only about the Commonwealth but about sports. Hence,we are very lucky that we are witnessing this rally,” said Bhupinder Singh,a budding footballer.

The Baton,which covered 1.7 lakh km across 70 countries,before reaching here,proceeded further for Chandigarh.

The Queen’s Baton Relay is a torch race symbolising the unity and shared ideals of the Commonwealth of nations. It carries a message from the head of the Commonwealth of Nations,currently Queen Elizabeth II of the UK. The baton has the ability to capture images and sound as it travels throughout the nations of the Commonwealth. With Global Positioning System (GPS) technology,it can be tracked through exact location.

Chandigarh to host girls’ national football meet

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh will host the 9th Junior National Football Championship for Girls to be held from July 15 to 30. As many as 27 teams will vie for the championship,while the teams have been divided into eight clusters. Defending champions Orissa are clubbed with Karnataka,Jammu & Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh in Cluster V,while last year’s runners-up Manipur find themselves in Cluster VI along with Chhattisgarh and Delhi. Chandigarh are in Cluster IV along with Jharkhand and Pondicherry. The preliminary round will be played from July 15 to 20,while the quarter-finals will be held from July 21 to 26. Both the semi-final will be played on July 28 and the grand finale on July 30.

Cluster I: Tamilnadu,Madhya Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh

Cluster II: Goa,Himachal Pradesh,Kerala & Sikkim

Cluster III: Haryana,Mizoram & Gujarat

Cluster IV: Jharkhand,Chandigarh & Pondicherry

Cluster V: Orissa,Karnataka,Jammu & Kashmir & Andhra Pradesh

Cluster VI: Manipur,Chhattisgarh & Delhi

Cluster VII: Assam,Uttarakhand & Maharashtra

Cluster VIII: Tripura,West Bengal,Punjab & Rajasthan

Swimming trials tomorrow

Trials will be held on July 3 at 9 am at Indoor swimming pool,Yoga Centre,Sector 23,for the selection of the Chandigarh team for the Junior and Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championship to be held from July 8 to 15 at Bangalore. This was discussed during an adhoc selection committee meeting held under the chairmanship of SM Sharma.

The selection trials will be held in the following age groups for both boys and girls:

Juniors:

Group–I (15 to 17 years) – Born in the year 1993,1994 & 1995.

Group–II (13 to 14 years) – Born in the year 1996 & 1997.

Sub-Juniors:

Group–III (11 & 12 years)- Born in the year 1998 & 1999.

Group–IV (09 & 10 years) – Born in the year 2000 & 2001.

The selection will be made for different swimming events of Sub-Juniors and Juniors. Sharma further informed that those swimmers who desire to take part in the trials should get their names registered with Jasjit Kaur,coach and Tarun Negi at Yoga Centre Swimming Pool,Sector 23,Chandigarh on or before July 2 upto 6 pm. Boys and girls who have been participating from other states during the previous years will have to secure No Objection Certificate (NOC) from those state associations before their selection trials for Chandigarh teams.

Pal,Rana elected technical officials

Dr. GP Pal,director of Physical Education (DPE),Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 20 and Shivani Rana have been selected as technical officials in the Eighth Asian Netball Championship which will be held at Tyag Raj Stadium,New Delhi from July 2 to 10.
