  • Following the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, the Sardar Sarovar Dam at Kevadia Colony has been identified as a high risk area. A Quick Reaction Team (QRT) has now been deployed at the site to prevent any untoward incident.

Armed with AK-47 assault rifles, QRT will also be provided with speedboats due to the proximity of the dam to the Madhya Pradesh (MP) border.

Khurshid Ahmed, Narmada district Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “The police are trying to equip the force with Self Loading Rifles (SLR) in lieu of the vintage .303s.” About 106 Gujarat Industrial Security Force (GISF) personnel and 25 policemen have been deployed at the dam. There are 15 ex-Army and policemen who have been training the GISF personnel to use latest weapons.

When asked about QRT, Ahmed said, “The team has been deployed as a precautionary measure. The QRT men undergo commando training.”

Earlier, Newsline had reported about Door Frame Metal (DFM) detectors at the dam being damaged by rats. “There were three DFMs at the dam. One has already been replaced with another from the Narmada police headquarters. The other two have been sent to Gandhinagar for repair.” he said. Police officers added that “Gadgets have been installed to check for hazardous material at the base of heavy vehicles.”
