More than seven years after his name figured in The Indian Express journalist Shivani Bhatnagars murder, former Haryana Inspector General of Police Ravi Kant Sharma was dismissed from service this month. The 1976 batch IPS officer was absent from his duties in the state from August 12,2002. He was posted as the IGP (Jails) at that time. The Haryana government has sent the orders of his dismissal.
The Central government had issued notice for his dismissal on April 20,2009,as he was convicted in the murder case. His case for dismissal was referred to the UPSC. Sharma was convicted for life by a Delhi Court on March 24,2008.
The Haryana government suspended him from service on August 23,2002. He was arrested in the murder case in September 2002 by the Delhi Police. He had been at important posts until he was caught for the murder and remained on deputation in the Prime Ministers Office before his arrest.
The state government had been slow in taking appropriate action against the officer. He was suspended from service in August 2002 for his absence from duty though it was known that he was running from the law during that period. The then Haryana government suspended him for exceeding his leave period. Even after he was convicted in the murder case, the state government did not take immediate action. Instead,it pushed the ball into the court of the Central government.
We are not his appointing authority, hence to dismiss him was the authority of the Centre. We have sent his orders after those came to us from the Centre, said a senior officer.
