Expressing reservation over bringing the Prime Minister under the purview of the Lokpal,Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the head of government should not come under the ambit of the ombudsman.
The Gandhi scion said the proposed Lokpal Bill should not apply to the Prime Minister till he or she completes his term.
“I have my concerns about bringing PM under Lokpal. PM has to lead the country. If you impose the Lokpal on him, then would be constantly engaged with it. It would be difficult for him. He should be under Lokpal the day he leaves PM office,” said Rahul.
He added: “The Lokpal Bill is fundamental. But Lokpal treats the diseases after its it happens. We have to address the disease before it happens. We have to think of improving the quality of the political system.
“The main reason for corruption is our closed political system. National Students Union of India and Youth Congress are trying to make the system open.”
Rahul said PM has acted very aggressively on corruption and corrupt Congress CMs were sacked. “But look at opposition. In Karnataka,we have a government which is as corrupt as UP government. The Opposition only talk about corruption, but do nothing about it,” he said.
