Rahul slams SP for ‘forgetting’ pre-poll promises

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised the ruling Samajwadi Party government for making populist promises before Assembly elections and then forgetting them after coming to power.

On a two-day visit to his parliamentary constituency Amethi, Rahul slammed the Akhilesh Yadav government for lack of development in the state.

Addressing gatherings at Salon, Gauriganj and Amethi on the concluding day of his visit, Rahul asked people whether they had received the benefits of unemployment allowance scheme, Kanya Vidya Dhan, laptop and tablet, or if the farmers had received loan waivers, or regular electricity supply, all which were the pre-poll promises of the Samajwadi Party. Getting a reply in the negative, Gandhi said that these unfulfilled promises speak for themselves.

He said that while he was doing all he can for the people through various central government schemes, his hands were tied as the implementation of the schemes is done by the state government. "We are doing only as much as we can do with one hand... supplying power is not the work of the central government," he said, adding that all these things can be done only when there is a Congress government in the state. "We have to work towards having it in Lucknow," he added.

Before starting his mass contact programme, the Congress vice-president met people at Munshiganj guest house in the morning. He held 41 mass contact programmes and addressed gatherings at 12 places during the day, before leaving for Delhi in the evening.
