After the visit of All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi, things have started brightening up for Shravasti’s Tilhar village.

Officials say the construction of the road, which will connect the village with the main highway, will start off soon and there will be reboring of a few handpumps for drinking water.

District administration officials have visited the village to check what facilities can be provided through government schemes.

Rahul had visited the remote village, which does not even have the basic amenities like electricity and roads, on September 23 and spent a night in the house of Dalit.

The visit took the state government by surprise and district officials promptly paid the place a visit when the miserable condition of the village got highlighted.

Among those who visited the village were the Chief Development Officer, the Block Development Officer, the District Rural Development Officer and officials from PWD and other departments.

Some of the long-pending works included electrification, construction of a connecting road approved under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) a year ago, reboring of handpumps and allotting a Public Distribution System shop for the village.

Ten days after Rahul’s visit, things have finally started moving.

The state government found that the nodal agency for the road building is the state PWD, which had already assigned the work to the Rajkiya Nirman Nigam.

T Ram, superintendent engineer, UPPWD, said: “We have written to the Nirman Nigam to ensure that the work starts off at the earliest. If the road had been approved, there should be no delay in its construction.”

    ... contd.
