Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday made a surprise visit to the family of slain DSP Ziaul Haque in Zuafar tola village of Deoria district to pay his condolences and assure them of an impartial probe and justice for Haque.
The hi-profile visit, which also included state Congress president Nirmal Khatri, MP Rasheed Masood and Rudrapur MLA Akhilesh Pratap Singh, was kept under wraps till the last moment. Arriving at Gorakhpur around noon, Rahul went to the village by road and interacted with the family for nearly an hour before visiting the grave of the DSP to pay his respects. Assuring the family of justice, Rahul said the culprits will not be spared.
"Haque's wife Parveen Azad became very emotional upon seeing Rahul Gandhi," said a senior party member who was present during the interaction with the family, which also included Haque's parents and his brother, among others. "She narrated the entire incident to Rahulji and said that the state government is trying to manipulate the investigations," the leader said.
"She asked Rahulji to ensure an impartial and speedy probe and appealed to him to stop the state government from misleading the investigations," said another party leader, who met the family along with Rahul.
