Rail traffic between Mumbai-Pune restored

    Rail traffic between Pune and Mumbai disrupted on Friday following an accident in northeast Mumbai leaving thousands of commuters inconvenienced, was restored on Saturday.

    On Friday, commuters travelling to Pune were heavily inconvenienced and had to resort to road transport.

    A water pipeline and a girder of a bridge that was under construction fell on a running train between Mulund and Thane on Friday morning killing three people and injuring at least 11 commuters.

    The accident in which amotorman also lost his life, had disrupted rail traffic on all the four lines on Friday.

    As a result, Central Railway had to suspend all the suburban services on all the lines. Long distance train services on the Pune, Kolkata and Chennai sectors were badly hit.

    But, on Saturday, the Central Railway authorities informed that due to the immediate steps taken by the railway team, the rail tracks got cleared in the morning and rail traffic returned to normal.

    “Various railway officers and staff reached the site immediately and restoration work was carried out on top priority,” railway spokesperson Y K Singh said.

    Hemant Tapale of Pune-Mumbai Pravasi Sangh said, “Thanks to the timely efforts put in by the railway personnel, the rail traffic was routine on Saturday.”

    The Central Railway has also informed that Kanyakumari-CSTM Express leaving Kanyakumari on October 26 and Madras-Dadar Express leaving Madras on the same day stand cancelled.
