A railway employee made a self-immolation bid at the railway yard here on Friday. He was rushed to the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital. The Government Railway Police (GRP) investigating the incident have reported that the man is mentally unstable.
The incident occurred around 4.45 pm when one Subhodhkumar Chaudhary (30), a Class IV worker at the Permanent Way Inspector (PWI) Office, was at the Pratapnagar Railway yard where he poured kerosene and set himself ablaze. Chaudhary was then rushed to the railway hospital, from where he was referred to the SSG Hospital later in the evening. Chaudhary belongs to Bihar.
“His colleagues at the yard reported that he was mentally ill and was under medication. But we are yet to confirm his medical
status. The police had also informed him that his
son had died earlier this month in his hometown, but he did not go home for the last rites. It is possible that his son’s loss made Chaudhary do it,” said S S Baranda, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Government Railway Police (GRP). He added that three PWI officers were present at the yard when the incident occurred.
“Statements of the eye witnesses have been recorded and Chadhary’s family has been informed about the incident. But
the reason behind his action is still not clear.
The matter will be investigated further when his family arrives,” said Inspector R K Vasava of the Dabhoi Railway Police.
