    Samba, Oct 26, 2003: Track at Samba in Jatwal blasted, five bogies of Samjota Express derail. No injuries or deaths

    Probe: The three militants reportedly behind the attack killed in an encounter at Akhnoor

    Jammu Railway Station, Aug 7, 2001: Three militants open fire, killing 12 and leaving 29 hurt

    Probe: One militant killed, identified as Nissar Ahmed of Achabal, two others flee. Case closed as untraced.

    Shalimar Express, Feb 10, 2000: Blast on board the train at Satwal. Five persons killed

    AHMEDABAD

    Kalupur, Feb 19, 2006, 1.45 am: Blast rips through Platform No. 2 of Kalupur Railway Station in Ahmedabad. 25 people injured. Casualties low as no train near the platform at the time

    Probe: City Detection of Crime Branch starts probe, concludes that the target was the Karnavati Express to Mumbai, which passes through at 1.45 pm. The attackers apparently set the timer for 12 hours later, at 1.45 am. Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad takes over case. On June 19, arrests two alleged Lashkar operatives, Mohammed Amir Shakil Ahmed Shaikh and Saiyed Aqif Jafruddin, both residents of Aurangabad. The two are also linked to the Aurangabad arms haul case, and “confess” involvement in the Kalupur conspiracy. Two other accused are absconding

    MUMBAI

    Local trains, July 11, 2006, 6.24-6.35 pm: Seven blasts in first-class compartments of seven suburban trains at peak time. 187 people are killed, over 600 injured

    Probe: ATS has so far arrested 13 people. Claims LeT men, some of them trained in Pakistan, carried out the blasts with the help of 12 Pakistani nationals. The men have been charged under MCOCA. Case yet to come up for trial.

    UTTAR PRADESH

    Varanasi, March 7, 2006: Twin blasts at Sankatmochan Temple and the waiting area of the Varanasi Cantt Railway Station. 14 die, 6 at the railway station

    Probe: UP police arrest six people, including alleged mastermind Walliullah and Maqbool Ali Mandal, Syed Shoaib Hasan, Mohammed Rizwan Siddiqui, Farhan and Mohammed Shad Ali. Claim blasts carried out by HuJI of Bangladesh, with links with Pakistan’s Jaish-e-Mohammed. Three Bangladeshi nationals who are believed to have planted the bombs are absconding

    Jaunpur, July 28, 2005: Blast in general compartment of Shramjeevi Express near the Hariharpur railway crossing in Jaunpur. 9 die, 50 are injured

    Probe: Blast triggered by a timer device. Explosives packed in a suitcase. Similar explosives would later be used for Varanasi blasts. UP police chargesheet blames HuJI. Case in trial stage.

    CHENNAI

    Tiruchi, Erode, Thrissur, Dec 6, 1997: IEDs go off in general compartments of three trains at Tiruchi, Erode and Thrissur. All the three trains, Pandiyan Express (to Tiruchy), Cheran Express (Coimbatore) and Alleppey Express, had originated from Chennai on Dec 5. 10 people die, nearly 150 injured

    Probe: All three blasts believed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition. Ten people, said to belong to the Islamic Defence Force based in Tamil Nadu and the All India Jihad Committee, arrested. Among the accused are Mohammed Kasim alias Erwadi Kasim, the head of the Islamic Defence Force. Another accused, Mohammed Dastagir, dies in March 2002 in Coimbatore prison.

    WEST BENGAL

    Siliguri, Nov 20, 2006: Blast rips through a compartment of Haldibari-New Jalpaiguri passenger train as it halts at Belakoba Railway Station. 7 die, 25 hurt

    Probe: No one claims responsibility. From Kamtapur Liberation Organisation men and ULFA to the banned Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, all considered probable suspects. There is confusion over the explosives used as well, one lab says ammonia-based, another RDX.

    CHANDIGARH

    Sirhind, March 13, 2002: Blast between Doraha and Sirhind on Dhanbad Express. 3 passengers are killed, 25 injured

    Probe: No organisation claimed responsibility, no suspect questioned, no arrests made.
