Railway terror: the track record

  • Probe: All three blasts believed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition. Ten people, said to belong to the Islamic Defence Force based in Tamil Nadu and the All India Jihad Committee, arrested. Among the accused are Mohammed Kasim alias Erwadi Kasim, the head of the Islamic Defence Force. Another accused, Mohammed Dastagir, dies in March 2002 in Coimbatore prison.

    WEST BENGAL

    Siliguri, Nov 20, 2006: Blast rips through a compartment of Haldibari-New Jalpaiguri passenger train as it halts at Belakoba Railway Station. 7 die, 25 hurt

    Probe: No one claims responsibility. From Kamtapur Liberation Organisation men and ULFA to the banned Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh, all considered probable suspects. There is confusion over the explosives used as well, one lab says ammonia-based, another RDX.

    Sirhind, March 13, 2002: Blast between Doraha and Sirhind on Dhanbad Express. 3 passengers are killed, 25 injured

    Probe: No organisation claimed responsibility, no suspect questioned, no arrests made.
