Raina’s wicket that never was

If Steven Finn had not dislodged the bail with his feet in the 36th over, India and England might have gone into the fifth ODI on level terms, or so England captain Alastair Cook believes. Suresh Raina, who went on to make an unbeaten 89, was caught at slip, but the umpire had signalled a dead ball by then as the wickets were dislodged at the bowler's end.

India needed 80 from 89 balls for the win with Raina batting on 41 at that point. Cook was involved in an animated discussion with umpire Steve Davis who had made the ruling, telling him that the bowler would have to be warned before the delivery could be called dead.

"There was a little bit of confusion. Apparently, we had been told before, but I think in the heat of the moment, you are not entirely sure," said Cook, of the incident.

"It is frustrating when such things happen. At that time, it wasn't pretty clear that we had been told before..at the moment, emotions were high. The decision was a crucial one," he said.

Prior warning

Umpire Davis apparently told Cook that the bowler had been, in fact, warned previously.

"To be fair to the umpires, they had told us that this is the rule.They had told us before in Kochi, he was told (warned). I couldn't remember the conversation they had" Cook said. When asked about the incident, MS Dhoni's reactions were typically minimal. "I think the best way to avoid such a thing is to stay away from stumps," he said.
