The Capital witnessed a warm weekend, with the temperatures shooting up to 28.7 degrees Celsius due to a large quantity of moisture in the air.

There is,however, some respite in the offing for residents,as the weatherman has predicted rains over the coming three days.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD),the western disturbance was formed on February 5 and at present lies over Jammu and Kashmir and North Pakistan in the form of an upper air cyclonic circulation. It is expected to bring some rain to Delhi and neighbouring areas on Sunday night,Monday morning and Tuesday, officials said.

The officials forecast that only a few areas in Delhi will witness rain, while the neighbouring regions have been warned of heavy rainfall and precipitation.

On Sunday, while the afternoon temperature soared, the evening remained cloudy in the Capital.

“We are expecting rains during Sunday night or early Monday morning,” the weatherman at the Safdarjung Met Department said. Although Sunday’s

maximum temperature was 6 degrees above normal, rains may bring down the mercury on Monday to 24 degrees,he added.

Officials said the effect of the circulation is likely to lessen on Tuesday, but it will renew itself on Wednesday and cause more rains.

The year began on a dry note and the expected rainfall may ease the deficiency caused in January. This year, only 6.2 mm of rainfall was recorded in January under the influence of western disturbances,of which 4.6 mm was recorded on January 13.

The average rainfall of Delhi for January over a long period is 22.6 mm.
