Prices of common vegetables including potatoes,onions and tomatoes in the city have shot up by almost 25 per cent within a day after the city recorded heavy rainfall on Thursday.
Owing to the damage in transportation,during the rainfall,costs of potatoes,onions and tomatoes have risen from Rs 20 per kg each to Rs 25 per kg since Thursday. The prices of cauliflower and peas,meanwhile,have gone up by Rs 20 per kg each,currently levelled at Rs 60 and Rs 80 per kg,respectively.
There had already been a shortage in the supply of some of the vegetables since last couple of days due to continuous showers in the region. As per the members of the market association,Sector 26,some portions of the production have been damaged due to the rains thereby leading to the deficit in supply.
President of Market Association,Lucky Sawhney said,Most of our supplies come from Himachal Pradesh,Punjab and Haryana. A major portion of the produce was damaged in transit on Thursday due to the heavy showers here. Last week,the rains in the northern states damaged some of the crops.
There has not been any immediate effect on the prices of fruits as yet. However,the marketing committee indicated a possibility of rise in the costs of fruits like apple and kinno.
With an expected rise in prices of LPG this week the cost of apples and kinno are also likely to shoot up, said a member of the market committee.
Though there has not been any immediate change in the costs of milk and dairy products like curd and paneer,their costs have been revised several times over the past few months. Since the beginning of this year,cost of milk per kg has gone up by Rs 3,while the total increase in costs of paneer and curd was Rs 15 and Rs 10 per kg,respectively.
