"Actually, Jaya Bachchan should have made a public apology because she was the one who made those remarks but we are accepting Amitabh's apology as he is head of the Bachchan family," Raj told reporters in Mumbai.

Mumbai police, which has issued gag orders against the MNS chief, allowed him to hold the press conference.

Raj said he had spoken to Mumbai police commissioner Hasan Gafoor on Wednesday and sought permission to put forth his views after Bachchan tendered the public apology on the issue.

Raj launched a vitriolic attack on Mumbai Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) K L Prasad for his alleged remarks that "Mumbai does not belong to any individual".

"Prasad should remove his police uniform, badge and chair and come onto the street and then he will realise to whom Mumbai belongs," he said.

The MNS chief said Prasad's comments were unwarranted and that he would ask the Congress-NCP government in the state to deal sternly with such officers.

Earlier, Raj alleged, the senior IPS officer had "threatened us that he would break our legs. This time, he said Mumbai is not anyone's personal property. He had no business saying that," Raj said.

In an apparent reference to Jaya's apology in a newspaper and the Big B's public apology at a hotel in the suburbs last evening, the MNS chief said "now, everyone knows what happens when the Marathi manoos (people) is united."

The MNS chief said he was "not happy" with the apology expressed by Amitabh in his blog. However, when the actor publicly apologised at a press conference, it was another matter, Raj said, announcing that he was calling off the agitation against the Bachchans.

However, Raj did not fail to take pot-shots at Jaya, "advising" her to "stick to the dialogues" that are given to her in writing.

Suspected MNS activists broke ticket counter and plasma screens at the PVR multiplex near the Bachchans' residence in suburban Juhu and injured one person on Wednesday. It forced the producers to call off the premiere of The Last Lear starring Amitabh.

On September 8, Raj had warned that not a single film involving the Bachchan family would be allowed to be released in Maharashtra till Jaya tendered an unconditional apology over her remarks.

The MNS chief had also asked Maharashtrians to boycott all products endorsed by the Bachchans. The appeal of people like Amitabh, Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar "transcends geographical boundaries", Raj said on Thursday. "Amitabh should not confine himself in regional boundaries", the MNS chief said.
