  • With New Delhi still not completely satisfied with his efforts to rehabilitate the Tamil civilian population in his country, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has not come to India on an official visit since his government’s decisive military victory over the LTTE earlier this year. But political compulsions become secondary when the deity calls. So, he did make a brief stop-over at the Tirupati shrine last weekend on his way back from Nepal where he had gone on an official visit. Rajapaksa, it seems, thought it wise to please the gods first before trying to convince the Indian political leaders of his genuine efforts to resettle the Tamilian population that got displaced because of the war. New Delhi was quick to term it a “private visit”.
