A day after the state Home Minister and police chief returned from Gandhinagar, the Rajasthan Police started digging out details of several cases filed against Sohrabuddin Sheikh. The police believe that submitting details in court will help M N Dinesh Kumar’s case. Kumar, an IPS officer from Rajasthan, has been arrested in the fake encounter case.

Home Minister Gulabchand Kataria said: “We are now gathering all details about the cases against Sohrabuddin, which we hope will be helpful in potraying his character in the court. From murder to kidnapping and from dealing in drugs to extortion, we have already collected details about 25 cases filed against him in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.”

Kataria said with a background like Sohrabuddin’s, it is very difficult to judge his encounter. “What happened and why will always remain questions of debate. All I can say right now is that he was a wanted criminal and the Rajasthan Police had gone to arrest him, which is quite legitimate. In what situation did the encounter happen is another question,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kataria who on Wednesday had said Kumar would fight on his own, today changed his statement and said, “We’ll provide him with all legal aid possible, all because he is one of our honest police officers.”
