Rajasthan sees first right-to-recall vote

For the first time ever, Rajasthan Wednesday witnessed an election in which voters exercised their right to recall. If more than half the 16,735 voters have sought recall — votes will be counted on December 14 — Ashok Jain will have to step down as chairman of the Manglore Nagar Palika in Baran.

The right to recall provision was introduced into the Rajasthan Municipalities Act in March 2011.

The election was announced after Jain, elected as an independent candidate in 2009, lost a no-confidence motion against him earlier this year. The motion accused Jain of inefficiency and high-handedness.

Jain accused Congress councillors of conspiring to bring him down but the municipal board — 17 of its 20 members voted against him — maintained he failed to deliver and disappointed the people of Baran.
