Rajasthan may witness bumper bajra output this year as farmers sowed this crop, which needs less water for sustenance,in 50 per cent more areas this year after the major producing state witnessed deficient rains in the start of this season.
According to Agriculture Department officials, the acreage of bajra has increased by 50 per cent and so the yield is likely to increase over the last year.
Already, early arrivals have indicated a bumper harvest this year in the state.
Bajra needs less irrigation. Sensing a weak monsoon this year, farmers shifted to bajra from other water consuming crops, the official said.
Bajra is estimated to be sowed on over 65 lakh hectares which is around 20 lakh hectares more than the targeted acreage. Farmers are expecting the yield to cross 100 lakh tonnes.
Last year, the production was around 80 lakh tonnes. “The estimations are based on the volume of arrivals and standing crops in the field,” the official said.
