Rajkot mass suicide: Plea in HC seeking CBI probe withdrawn

The petition seeking a CBI probe into the recent incident in Rajkot in which four members of a family died in a mass suicide attempt was withdrawn Tuesday after a single-judge bench of High Court observed it fell under the purview of public interest litigation.

The petition was moved by Ahmedabad-based student leader George Dias,who had also sought compensation for the kin of victims.

According to Diass lawyer S R Yadav,the court observed that the petitioner could file a PIL.

Five members of a Nepalese family had attempted self-immolation at the Rajkot Municipal Corporations office a few days ago fearing demolition of a house they had constructed on the common plot of a housing society.

Four of them later succumbed to serious burns. The family had alleged harassment from the two councillors,who were later arrested.

Call to CBI office warns of serial blasts in city

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Gandhinagar received a phone call Monday night warning it about a possible bomb blast in Ahmedabad.

The call was received by the receptionist at the landline number of CBIs Anti-Corruption Bureau.

According to CBI sources,the anonymous caller said he had overheard a group of people talking to each other where one said he had information about plans for serial blasts in Ahmedabad.

CBI officials have alerted the state control room after the call and the matter is being probed by Detection of Crime Branch.
