Congress MP Kunvarji Bavaliya who received an extortion message on his mobile from his former student was not willing to lodge a complaint as the student concerned was mentally unsound, police said.
Bavaliya who was returning from Delhi on Thursday received an SMS on his mobile phone demanding Rs 3 crore, police said, adding the MP from Rajkot informed the state DGP and also Vicchiya police station at Jasdan.
Vinchhiya police swung into action and tracked down the mobile number to one Muldas Meswania (42) and detained him.
However, he was later released as Bavaliya, a former teacher, refused to take any action against him since he was mentally unstable and was also Bavaliya's former student, police said.
Bavaliya was not available for comment.
Cop hurt as groups clash in Rajkot
A policeman was injured and a few vehicles were torched in the city following a clash between members of two communities Saturday morning, police said.
The incident took place when four youths of Koli community were attacked by members of a minority community at Nageshwar area in Jamnagar, police said.
Enraged over this, some members of the Koli community rushed to one of the minority community members's house and started pelting stones, police said, adding that one policeman sustained minor injury in the incident.
A police team rushed to the spot to control the situation, which had become tense after members of both the communities set a car and a motorcycle ablaze.
Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob and the situation was brought under control. Security in the area has been beefed up, police said, adding that no arrests have been made in the incident.
